The annual Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program sponsored by the Schoolcraft Community Library. The Battle is open to fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The competitions consist of library staff members asking detailed questions about books from a predetermined reading list.

Each “Battle Team” may consist of five to seven students, though six team members are encouraged. The team members must provide the correct answer and book author to score points. Teams with the highest cumulative score after 21 questions (three rounds of seven questions each) during the Preliminary Battles will earn the right to participate in one of two Semi-Final Battles later in the day.

The teams with the highest scores following Semi-Final Battles participate in the “Grand Battle” the following week to determine the final winner.

MAP—Michigan Activity Pass:  Explore Michigan with the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) now available at the library.  Using your library card, you can check out a FREE pass to one of 60 participating museums and cultural centers in Michigan.  Get information at the library or visit www.michiganactivitypass.info.

ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP— The Prairie Pageturners meet the first Wednesday of the month for lively book discussions, refreshments and friendship.  The November selection is Thrift Store Saints by Jane Knuth.  Author is to speak at next meeting.  Copies of books are available at the library.

READING GARDEN AND BUTTERFLY GARDEN—The Reading Garden has been started!  Two weeks ago the crew from Portage Greatscapes arrived on the scene and has made lots of progress towards making this dream become a reality.  Weather permitting, the garden will be finished by the end of the month.  Stop by see the progress.  Many thanks to all those who have helped to make this possible.  The ‘Garden Party’ was a huge success and staff is very grateful to the Village of Schoolcraft, Vicksburg Foundation, Friends of the Library and the many private donors who have given their support for this beautiful, new space at the library.
