Vicksburg Teachers Care for the Whole Child

During this brutal winter, Vicksburg teachers are doing more for their students than just providing a quality education. They’re looking out for the whole child. They collected children’s winter items which were then donated to South County Community Services through the “Caring for the Whole Child” project.

“This is the first year we’ve done this project, and it was such a great success thanks to our colleagues and the community,” says Liz Ratashak, Vicksburg Education Association president. “February is typically one of the coldest months of the year and there is such a need to make sure our students have what they need to stay warm and secure.”

Members of the Education Associations from Comstock, Schoolcraft and Vicksburg collected the items and then together prepared individual packages of socks, hats, and mittens for a child. More than 100 packages were assembled and donated to charities in each of the communities. South County Community Services received packages to donate to community members.

“We coordinated our efforts with the education associations in Comstock and Schoolcraft on this project,” says Ratashak. “We pooled our resources and efforts and were able to help many children in the three communities. We’ll definitely do this again next year.”
