Classes for people caring for loved ones with memory loss or dementia are being offered by the Area Agency on Aging at South County Community Center (SCCS) in six sessions in June and July. The dates are June 5, 12, 19, 26, and July 10 and 17. Each class meets from 6 – 8 p.m.
The program, called “Creating Confident Caregivers,” addresses the needs for information and resources to better manage the stress of caregiving, according to Danna Downing, executive director of SCCS.
The class is about empowering and educating individuals caring for a person with memory loss or dementia.
Subjects include learning about dementia and its effects on the brain, caregiver resources, managing behaviors, and improving caregiving skills. The classes will also touch on how to handle everyday activities more easily and taking care of yourself to better care for your loved one, Downing said.
If respite care is needed so the caregiver can attend, that can be arranged, she said.
