For the first time in Vicksburg High School history, the women’s tennis team competed in the state tournament after placing second at regionals behind Harper Creek.
Helping them on their way to the state tournament, senior Alex Oswalt took first place at regionals and sophomore foreign exchange student, Alabina Zaganjor earned a second place standing. Six of the eight competitors for Vicksburg made it into the semi-finals at the regional level.
At the Wolverine Conference level, Vicksburg placed second in the East Conference behind Allegan, and tied with Edwardsburg for a third place standing in the Conference overall. Individual results for Conference included third place finishes by Zaganjor, Oswalt, number two doubles team of Julia Cantu and Calista Kaufman, number three doubles team of Claire Mutch and Katie Reed, and number four doubles team of Rachel Blough and Josephine Hosner, and a fourth place finish by number four singles Marie Ludeman.
The Bulldogs finished their season in a conference match with Edwardsburg where they suffered a 6-2 loss. The two wins were by Zaganjor and Oswalt.
Brandywine was their next opponent with the Bulldogs taking a 3-5 loss. Zaganjor, Oswalt and Ludeman were credited with the three wins in that competition. Conference opponent and Conference winner Allegan blanked the Bulldogs, 8-0.
The Bulldogs came back to beat Comstock the next day 7-1. Sturgis handed the Bulldogs a 2-6 loss with wins by number two singles Oswalt and number three doubles team of Mutch and Reed.
Coach Warner Offord is proud that this young team made this record achievement this 2014 season.
