“The Library Is Horsin’ Around”

The Schoolcraft Community Library is home to many horse enthusiasts, starting with one of its own—Susan Harper Grieger. Susan has been an enthusiastic horsewoman since she was a little girl. She says she loves the smell of horses and even horse manure! Can you imagine?   And though Susan certainly helps feed the interest, many of us have had a link with horses sometime in our past, as well.

Miss Bobbi Truesdell, the library director, actually was raised on a farm and had a Palomino horse named Honeycomb when she was growing up. However, she will admit that, while she really admires horses, she is actually quite afraid of them, too, having had her horse run away with her years ago, on a Sunday afternoon ride. But that has not stopped her from choosing some wonderful horse books for her favorite event—Battle of the Books. Over the years, she has used the following books: The Water Horse by Dick King Smith, Black Stallion by Walter Farley, The Misadventures of Maud March or Trouble Rides a Fast Horse by Audrey Couloumbis, Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan, and War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.

There are, of course, many horse-related series, such as Pony Pals, Heartland, Sandy Lane Stables, Saddle Club, Blaze, and the Black Stallion series, as well as the Marguerite Henry books. In addition, there are some other wonderful horse stories—some real, some fiction. Why don’t you come on in and try one of these?
