The Vicksburg High School Varsity Competitive Cheerleading team finished their season last month, shattering high school records along the way. The team, coached again this year by Stacy Childs, made it their goal to try to continually beat their own scores with each competition. They began their road to achieve this feat at the Stoney Creek competition where they surpassed the schools’ record of 217 points in Round One with a new high-score of 223 points.
At the Sturgis Invitational, where Vicksburg took the title, the lady Bulldogs beat their team’s best score in round two as well as breaking the school record for total points by scoring 701.98. It was the first time in school history they had scored over 700. The team added another title at the Kalamazoo Central “Think Pink” Invitational, where Vicksburg defeated longtime foes Mattawan and Lakeshore High Schools for the Division 2 title.
In front of a home crowd, Vicksburg took the title at the Bulldog Invitational, scoring an impressive 683.68. Proving that they were not going to end the season without a fight at District finals in Mattawan, the lady Dawgs broke a school record in round 3, and proceeded to top their newly-achieved overall high score by tallying 703.5 points. Vicksburg finished seventh out of the fifteen teams in the district.
Coach Childs notes that, “The drive and talent this team possessed was critical in their record-breaking season. With half of the team eligible to return next year, I look forward to continuing this tradition.”
