The Sons of American Legion Squadron #475 in Schoolcraft have donated $1,000 toward Lake Michigan Credit Union’s (LMCU) One Pencil Project Campaign for local schools. Tracy Molnar pulled the donation together from the veterans, which will go toward school supplies that area teachers can request to help them out in their classrooms.

A bag of school supplies for elementary through middle school teachers is available for any teacher who goes to the credit union’s web site and requests it. About half the teachers in Vicksburg and Schoolcraft take advantage of the offer, according to Carmen Bell, the Schoolcraft branch supervisor for LMCU.

The offer even went as far as Leonidas, when Bell delivered the bag personally to a school that houses many Amish students. “This was the most fun delivery that I’ve done for this project,” Bell said. “The kids were so excited. This particular teacher came into our branch office to get her teachers certificate notarized. We got to talking about the program and she was ecstatic to receive the supplies.”

The credit union’s headquarters is in Grand Rapids and spends about $10,000 per year on the One Pencil Project, which is spread out throughout southwest Michigan, Bell said.
