Thanksgiving is fast approaching, which means it will soon be time for the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church’s annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
“It’s been 16 years since we first implemented our dream to feed those in need of food or fellowship on Thanksgiving Day,” said a church organizer. “Without the support of our church members and the community, we know we would not be able to provide this meal to so many people.”
Over the past 15 years the church has faced some challenges: Problems with a malfunctioning gas line, an early winter blizzard that almost forced the cancellation of the meal and always, the fear of not having enough food to feed everyone who comes or calls.
There have been some heartwarming stories and rewarding personal experiences for many of the volunteers at the event. Organizers recall only one dinner that was obstacle-free, but said God has always been there taking care of the situation.
This year, as in several years past, home delivery of Thanksgiving dinners can be arranged by calling the church between now and Thanksgiving Day at 11 a.m. The number to call is 269-679-4845.
“Don’t spend Thanksgiving alone when friends are so close by. Call us if you need a ride or a home delivery, or want to donate to the dinner,” said Pastor Julia Humenik.
