Schoolcraft Volleyball Wins

By Sean Budlong

Schoolcraft’s volleyball team has performed well during its tough early schedule. The eighth ranked (Class C) Eagles head into October undefeated in league play at 6-0. In tournament play, the Eagles have beaten Class A and B teams such as Vicksburg, South Haven, Paw Paw, Kalamazoo Central, and Battle Creek Lakeview.

Schoolcraft has been led by seniors Madie Hybels, Sophie Woodhams and Jessica Budlong. While the senior class has led by example, two freshman have had immediate impact. Andelyn Simkins and Madi Ballett have been key contributors to the team’s success. Simkins leads the team in kills, while Ballett has been strong on offense and defense.

Opposing teams know they are going to face an aggressive offense when they play Schoolcraft. Midway through the season, Hybels, Simkins, Ballett, and Kelsey Feddema have provided the bulk of the offense. Olivia Ingle, Chloe Outman and Alisa Ertman are sophomores that have played well on the net.

While the defense has had its lapses, Woodhams and Halie Rhoda have been able to keep volleys alive by digging balls to setters Budlong and Abby Pincumbe. Serving has been a strength of this team. Budlong, Simkins, Hybels, Woodhams and Picumbe have generated significant points for the Eagles on serve.

The schedule gets even tougher in October. Schoolcraft faces Kalamazoo Christian and Hackett in league play. The Eagles also travel to East Grand Rapids and Laingsburg.
