Vicksburg students continue to shine in regional competitions, both in and out of athletics. A great example is the Vicksburg High School Junior Achievement program. This past month the students from the program scored another impressive victory in a regional competition called the “Titan Challenge,” held at WMU’s Haworth College of Business.

The Vicksburg squad prevailed over 116 other students from around the region to take first place. The competition centered on teams of students who had to take charge of an imaginary company and operate it on a day-to-day basis. Winning required savvy decision-making and attention to incoming data and details in a timely manner.

The first place team in the gold level of the competition was “The Cheetahs” from Vicksburg, made up of Kylie Kalleward and Mason Glerum. As the overall winner of the JA Titan Challenge, Kalleward and Glerum will each receive a $500 scholarship and will go on to compete in the National Competition in May 2017. The first place team in the silver level was “CC Pride” from Comstock, first place in Bronze level was “Ram Rod” rom Climax/Scotts, and first place in copper level was “JAD” from Schoolcraft.

The team wanted to specially thank to all of the corporate sponsors of Junior Achievement and the team, as well as the Junior Achievement coach and sponsor, VHS business teacher Scott Wills.

The purpose of the National Junior Achievement Organization is to help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs, which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities.
