Bulldog Bowlers Fall Just Short at Regionals

By Travis Smola

There were high hopes for the Vicksburg boys’ varsity bowling team going into the latter half of the season. But things didn’t turn out quite the way they had hoped.

In the Regional meet the boys took seventh place with 3,578 pins. The team had a tough time competing with extremely talented Sturgis, Coldwater and Battle Creek Pennfield teams at the regional meet.

There were still hopes some of the boys could qualify for state in the individual competitions the next day. Senior Hunter Myers was closest to qualifying but couldn’t get into the top 10 required for a state berth. He ended up finishing 16th with 1150 pins. Unfortunately, that total was just 31 pins away from qualifying. He got off to a great start bowling 234 in his first game, but didn’t crack 200 again until game five.

The next highest individual finishes were by junior Hunter Bierema and sophomore Jordan Cosby who tied for 29 with 1097 pins. Senior Cameron Haase finished 37 with 1080 pins. Senior John Vreeman came in at 41 with 1056 pins.

Ultimately Vicksburg is still an up-and-comer in the bowling scene and it appears a real program is starting to build. “They have good attitudes and good sportsmanship,” Myers said. He also noted several promising players are waiting to move up to the varsity level next year.
