Vicksburg Middle School 8th grader Marcus Hackman was awarded a $250 campership to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this summer. The award was presented by Friends of Vicksburg Youth at the VMS Spring Concert in May. Patty Stoll, middle school band director, enthusiastically agreed with the choice, saying that along with planning to attend Blue Lake, Marcus also takes private lessons, participates in Grace Fields camp and Junior Symphony.
Other campership recipients include Dontrell McFerrin and Brianna Buckhout. During the high school’s spring concert, Ben Rosier, director of bands, announced that each of these incoming freshmen had been awarded a $125 Friends of Vicksburg Youth campership toward marching band camp this summer.
Friends of Vicksburg Youth is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing outdoor experiences that enrich the lives of youth in the South Kalamazoo County area and beyond. The group maintains and continues to improve the “Camp Char Le Maude” property on Barton Lake.
The organization also supports a number of outdoor youth activities including Youth Shooting Sports Teams, scouting units including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts, youth educational and fine arts summer camps. This is the second year that the organization has presented $500 in camperships to VCS band students.
