Vicksburg community cleanup Saturday, Nov. 13

Vicksburg residents are invited to a Community Cleanup Day on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon. The efforts are being organized by a collaborative group that includes the Lions Club, Rotary and the village Parks and Recreation Committee.

“Our community has been very generous in showing support for the local parks as indicated by the extremely successful campaign to raise funds for the Bringing Oswalt Park Back to Life campaign,” said Jennie Holmes, chairperson of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation, “A community cleanup day is another way to show pride for our village. In the past, we have had great turnout for the community cleanup. The Parks and Rec Committee would like to turn this into a twice-a-year community event with additional activities once the infrastructure project is complete.”

Cleanup Day has long been a tradition of Lions and Rotary Clubs in Kalamazoo. This year the clubs teamed up with the Parks and Recreation Committee to involve the entire community.

Some of the work will be to care for new perennial gardens planted by volunteers of the Parks and Recreation Committee in 2020. The perennials, including native flowers and prairie grasses, were relocated to Clark Park and Sunset Lake Park when it was discovered that they would have been damaged by the infrastructure project.

“We estimate that we saved thousands of dollars in plants,” said Holmes. “We are very pleased with their performance in their first year, and with a little care, they will thrive for a long time.”
