KRESA tax renewal on May 2 county-wide ballot

Kalamazoo County voters in a May 2 election will consider a renewal of a property tax of 1.5 mills – $1.50 per $1,000 taxable valuation – to continue an enhancement millage which expired in 2022.

If approved, the renewal will be levied over the six years beginning in 2023 through 2028. In the first year, it would raise an estimated $14.04 million to be shared among the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency’s (KRESA) school districts and charter schools.

The millage was first approved by voters in 2005 for shorter periods. It was last approved in 2020 for three years. KRESA, the county’s intermediate school district, anticipates asking voters for future renewals at six-year intervals.
