Community corner: Summer happenings at SCCS

By Drew Johnson

Summer has officially kicked off! SCCS has a lot of different things going on this summer, so I thought I would put it all down in one place for everyone (including me)!

Dates to Know:

July 4: Fourth of July Parade in Schoolcraft

July 11: Hosting Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce Mixer with Generous Hands

July 12: ‘Burg Days of Summer at 5:30 p.m.

August 5: Backpack Bonanza with Generous Hands

August 9: ‘Burg Days of Summer at 5:30 p.m.

In between those events we are developing a new recognition program for donors/volunteers, partnering with the Vicksburg Farmer’s Market to provide vouchers for fresh food to our pantry clients, collecting school supplies for South County students, working with the Portage Senior Center and Brady Township to put on Matter of Balance classes for seniors who live in South County, and much more! This is in addition to our regular work, which entails helping seniors and low-income residents of South County meet their basic needs. Some of our regularly scheduled programming is listed below.

Regular Happenings:

Veteran Services Navigation: Every Wednesday, 9 a.m.-noon. Bring a copy of your DD-214 to your first appointment.

Footcare Clinic: The second Thursday of the month. Please call ahead for an appointment.
Area Agency on Aging Navigation: The fourth Wednesday of the month, 1-4 p.m.

Senior Walking Group: Every Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Vicksburg Nature Trail trailhead

Food Pantry: Open 10 a.m.-noon., Monday-Thursday. Please call ahead for an appointment.

Please feel free to reach out if you are interested in any of our programming and want more information about it! And as always, if you’d like to be involved in helping out with any of these efforts, let me know! We are especially looking for drivers for our van and volunteers with graphic design experience.
