It’s been happening for over 20 years; the Freemasons of Schoolcraft Lodge 118 provide scholarships to students graduating from Schoolcraft High School. Kenny Stiver and Carl Tackett, members of the Scholarship Committee, made sure funds are appropriated, applications get in students’ hands, and the celebration dinner is held.
This year’s winners are Alexandra West and Kelsey Broekema. Alexandra is the daughter of Eric and Shawna West. She is a member of the National Honor Society and active in her school and community. She has a cumulative 3.88 GPA. Her activities include softball, bowling, Marching Band Color Guard, volleyball and Tae Kwon Do. Alexandra plans to attend Western Michigan University and major in athletic training.
The second winner is Kelsey Broekema, the daughter of Thomas and Rita Broekema. Kelsey is a member of the National Honor Society and has a cumulative 3.95 GPA. She is very active in school and extra-curricular activities, and in the community. Kelsey has been captain of the cross country and track teams, and has done mission work in Indiana and Pennsylvania.
The Masons celebrated the scholarship winners with an awards dinner where each was presented a $1,000 check. The dinner was held at the Masonic Lodge, which was also used as a forum to present this year’s Mason of the Year award. Recipient Tom Kelly has been an active Mason in Schoolcraft for many years and continues to contribute to the Lodge and the community.
