To help seniors with balance issues, The Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring a fall prevention workshop, A Matter of Balance, which presents practical strategies to improve balance and reduce falls.

The workshop will be held at the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 28 through November 20 from 1-3 p.m.

The agency has sponsored the same class in Vicksburg with local coaches and believe that it has made a big difference for those who are concerned about falling, according to Marilyn Reed, program director.

Students will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, and learn exercises to increase strength and balance. Those who have restricted their activities because of the fear of falling or anyone who is concerned about falling will benefit from the class, said Reed.

Some other recommended strategies to prevent falls include: have a doctor or pharmacist review all medications to help reduce the chance of risky side effects that could cause dizziness or drowsiness; have eyes checked to make sure poor vision doesn’t interfere with getting around safely; remove hazards at home with a safety check that helps identify clutter; and improve lighting so you can see better.

Pre-registration is required by contacting the church office at 269-679-4845, or by calling Reed at the Area Agency on Aging at 269-373-5224 for more information.
