Former KVCC girls basketball coach Ron Welch and new coach Maureen Brown watch Liz Weddon sign her letter of intent to play at KVCC. Behind them are Liz’s high school coach, Paul Gephart, her parents Todd and Carol Weddon, and Alton Tucker of Attack Basketball.

Liz Weddon will take her athletic and academic skills to Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) in 2015 to play for a new basketball head coach, Maureen Brown. It won’t be a huge transition according to Brown, because she has been the assistant to a legend, her father Ron Welch, for the last ten years.

The scholarship offer is a one year commitment for Weddon but could turn into two, if she chooses to stay at KVCC. She will have some good company as the new coach has a bumper crop of athletes from championship basketball teams throughout the area. They will be coming from Battle Central, Plainwell, Paw Paw, Grand Rapids, and Hopkins all have players Brown has recruited. “Liz is slated to play in the post where she did a super job for Vicksburg’s District Championship caliber team,” Brown said. Weddon was Honorable Mention on the Kalamazoo Gazette’s all-area team. She has played travel basketball for four years to hone her skills.

Besides basketball, Weddon plays on the drum line in the band, has been out for track all four years in high school, and carries a 3.7 GPA. She plans to major in graphic design and photography and has contributed some of her photos to this newspaper over the last two years.
