Edwardsburg played the lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team close for three quarters before Vicksburg pulled away in the fourth for a 54-42 victory January 22.

The victory was Vicksburg’s sixth of the season, giving the team a 6-3 overall record. Since returning from the holiday break, the lady Bulldogs have been on a roll. They defeated Portage Northern 48-30 in their first game back.

They dropped the next game to Sturgis 62-48, but made up for it with a 59-25 blowout of Dowagiac.

Vicksburg was actually behind after a good run by Edwardsburg in the second quarter. But, as they’ve done so often this season, the tremendous depth of this year’s squad helped to wear down the Eddies later on. The lady Bulldogs were able to keep fresh players on the court until late in the game.

Helping lead the way was junior Layna Steele, who was all over the court and led the team with 21 points. “That’s probably the best she’s shot all year,” Vanabel said.

Junior Grace Welch and senior Olivia Holmes were also key players in the victory, consistently finding ways to get open and getting some late points to help wear down the Eddies’ defense.
