Vicksburg’s varsity softball team is 4-2 on the year and hoping to continually improve.

The Lady Bulldogs lost five seniors last year, but head coach Paul Gephardt is making no excuses for how the team does. There is a lot of youth on the team, but he expects them to get better and better as the season moves forward.

The team lost a doubleheader to Three Rivers and took two against Coldwater before facing visiting Cadillac in their latest match-up, winning 15-0 in both games.

The first game saw senior Avery Slancik throw seven strikeouts and give up only one hit in the four-inning game. She also slammed home a big three-run homer in the second. The score was 10-0 when senior Lauren Goertler hit a huge solo home run over the center field fence.

But the Lady Bulldogs weren’t done with the big plays. Sophomore Remi O’Neill made things 14-0 after smacking home another three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Kali Yant ended the game with a single to bring fellow junior Keagan Kelley home for the winning score.

In the second game, sophomore Rylie Richter came away with the win after throwing nine strikeouts and also giving up just a single hit in another game that lasted just four innings. Slancik had four RBIs while Yant had three.
