Note: the following letter was sent by Supt. Keevin O’Neill to VHS seniors regarding a graduation ceremony amid COVID-19.
Dear Vicksburg High School Class of 2020 Graduates, Parents, and Guardians:
First and foremost, congratulations on the completion of your senior year. All of us at VCS and the Board of Education are so proud of you and your accomplishments. You have shown incredible composure over the past several months and we truly would like to thank you for your patience and grace.
Throughout the “stay home, stay safe” order, we have consistently communicated our desire to hold a traditional graduation ceremony to honor and confer diplomas to the VHS class of 2020.
We are pleased to announce the graduation ceremony date for the VHS Class of 2020:
Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 7 pm in the Vicksburg Stadium
During the decision-making process to hold a traditional graduation ceremony, we wanted to plan for a good, better, and best case scenario for graduation. Please understand we will continue to follow all executive orders and state and local guidelines regarding large gatherings.
Here is our plan for good, better, and best case scenarios for graduation:
BEST: Traditional graduation ceremony with no distancing restrictions and unlimited guest attendance.
BETTER: Traditional graduation ceremony with recommended distancing and a limited number of guests allowed.
GOOD: “Drive up” graduation to honor graduates individually with limited family.
As we continue to move through the current Executive Order, we certainly understand a new order may be executed in the near future. With that in mind, we have also planned two alternate graduation dates. We are planning alternate dates in order to ensure we can have the BEST case scenario described above. In addition, in the event of inclement weather, these alternate dates will ensure a graduation ceremony:
1st Alternate Date: Thursday, July 23 at 7 pm
2nd Alternate Date: Thursday, August 6, at 7 pm
We will continue to communicate regularly regarding the plan for graduation. Thanks again for your patience and grace.
