For the month of January, Coach Max Kulczyk led his group of varsity Lady Eagles to a record of 6-0 on the basketball court. With the team buying into a system that focuses on being as locked in on the defensive end as possible, it’s no surprise that their record reflects the effort that is put into every practice and game.
The girls started the month on the road with three away games. The first two wins were blowout victories against Coloma High School and Delton Kellogg High School, with final scores of 49-8 and 68-17. The last game of their road trip was a win against Constantine High School, where they handled business with a final score of 41-25.
Following their road trip, the Lady Eagles held a home match against Hackett Catholic Prep High School, where they fought off the Irish with a final score of 54-26. Their next game, against Kalamazoo Christian, continued their display of dominance with a final score of 53-37.
Standouts from the game were Maddy Ingle, who scored 17 points, and Mackenzie Miller, who added 19 points along with 10 rebounds to the stat sheet.
The ladies returned to Schoolcraft for a game against Buchanan High School, where they put their talents on display for the home crowd with a 51-25 final score.
The highlighted performers of that game were Allie Walther, who stuffed the stat sheet 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, along with a ferocious five steals, Hannah Thompson, who added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and four key steals to the game, and Mackenzie Miller, who was on fire with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Team captains Allie Walther and Mackenzie Miller, both four-year varsity players, have set the tone for the season as go-to leaders for what should be expected on and off the court.
“They understand that for us to be successful our number one focus needs to be on the defensive end,” said Coach Kulczyk. “If we want to make a run in the postseason, we need to continue to work on putting our best foot forward for 32 minutes each game.”
The Lady Eagles were to face their next opponent at home against Delton Kellogg on February 1.
