By Marilyn Jones, Schoolcraft’s Poet Laureate
From the moment she was born, on a cold December morn
She has been extra special to me,
I have other grandchildren that I love, too
But Angel’s the star on my tree!
I tried to always be there for her
At Little League, track and basketball,
She also learned to play the piano
And plays for me once in a while
When she performed in dance recitals
I sat proudly in front, with a smile.
We went on trips, she was only ten
When the “Big Apple” beckoned to us,
We did all the tourist attractions
Travelling around on a sightseeing bus.
Niagara Falls and Toronto were exciting
Mackinac Island was fun, too,
We pedaled bikes up those steep hills
Not too easy for a Grandma to do!
Sometimes her friends think she’s crazy
On a beautiful, warm, sunny day,
She tells them she’s taking Grandma to the beach
They think it’s strange at 98, she still likes to play.
One day last summer, the phone rang
I answered and heard, “Are you ready?”
Of course, it was Angel calling
I replied, “Yes, I’m ready for anything!”
“I’ll pick you up soon, we’ll go to South Haven”
The day was kinda gray and gloomy,
But we were soon on our way, hoping for sun today.
There were lots of parking spaces, Hurray!
We walked in the sand to a bench that was vacant
Pretty sailboats were coming in, and didn’t lag
As big raindrops began to drip, Angel said,
“No problem, I’ve got an umbrella in my bag.”
A young guy passed and she called to him
“Will you take our picture, please?”
He smiled, put his stuff down and snapped one.
Here is the result of us having fun!
We then went to the shops
Browsed about, bought a few things,
Then ended our day with double dip cones
Laughing and happy, we headed for our homes.
Angel has given me so much happiness
Thank God for her, we had a great time!
