This winter has been brutal! We had a little tease mid-February but were smacked down again with freezing temperatures and more snow! How are we going to make it to spring?
Vicksburg Arts has the perfect solution! Challenge your mom or dad, your best friend, your roommate, your partner, your granddaughter or grandson, your sister or brother to write a short story or poem! Share those written works with your mate. No takers? That’s ok! We know you have a great story inside that is dying to be written!
Think about attending the Tournament of Writers’ Clinic, sponsored by and located at the Vicksburg District Library on Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then, with great courage and conviction, share your awesome stories by submitting your works to the Tournament of Writers by March 14. The rest of the world is holding its breath, waiting for YOUR story!
The Tournament of Writers is now in its 12th year. Every year, we invite people to join the tournament and this is YOUR year to make it happen! There are 3 age divisions, elementary and middle school, high school and adult. Participants can enter in fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
The Writers’ Clinic got a makeover this year. Six published authors and educators will be on hand to review draft works and provide valuable comments for participants to consider. Participants will be able to edit their works on site and return to coaches for further review and improvement. This process will be a bit like speed dating, only it will be speed coaching! The timing on this clinic couldn’t be more perfect: Polish your story to perfection at the clinic before submitting your entry to the Tournament.
Each entry is reviewed by three judges who score the works using a rubric system. They also provide valuable insight and feedback to the writer. The tournament publishes all submitted works in two paperback collections. Participants get a complimentary copy of the book their work is published in. Participants and their families and friends are invited to the official book release celebration April 23. Winners are announced and selected readings from this year’s works are read at the celebration. We end the night with a book signing by all authors present!
One more option this year for Tournament participants: reading your work during the inaugural Pulp & Press Lit Fest April 25.
