How many of you can remember
The World’s Fair in Chicago, in the 30s?
Not many, I’ll bet, but I do!
I’ve forgotten much, since I was just five
It’s amazing that I’m still alive.
Some friends had a Model T Ford
They said that we could ride along,
We left early and fixed a lunch to eat on the way
Folks were still poor, with depression day.
It was noisy and exciting at the daylight view
Rides, sideshows, such amazing things
Wonderful sights, that were fit for kings!
My young brain couldn’t sink it all in
But two things remain clearly in my mind
A boy on a Red Flyer wagon, 40 feet high,
Was riding on his knee, way up high in the sky!
Barkers were yelling, drawing in the crowds
Sally Rand was performing a fan dance
With everyone trying to get a peek,
She kept those fans moving, without fail
Men were shoving, to get a ticket on sale!
We slept in the car a while
Exhausted, we headed for home,
Arriving very early in the morning
We all had a 5-cent ice cream cone.
