It’s safe to say the second half of the season hasn’t been kind to the Vicksburg girls’ varsity basketball team. After going on a four-game winning streak at the end of February, the Bulldogs lost five games in a row. This brings their record to 7-10 for the season.
Things haven’t been easy for any teams in January and February. Heavy snows forced a rash of game cancellations and limited practices. The team also faced more of a road schedule in the latter half of the season.
One of their more recent road outings to Otsego proved rough. Otsego had a clear size and experience advantage. Subsequently, Vicksburg fell 61-14 in the first of two annual “battles of the Bulldogs.” Vicksburg tied the game 2-2 in the first few minutes of the game, but things quickly got out of hand. By the end of the first, it was already 20-2. Otsego led 29-8 at the half.
Ellie Lincoln and Harper Roy were the two leading scorers for Vicksburg. Each had a free throw and a field goal. Lainey Wilson, Madison Cooley, Eve Lincoln, and Victoria Hillard each added two points. Otsego’s stifling defense kept Vicksburg from connecting on any three-point attempts.
Vicksburg’s four-game winning streak started with a 44-34 win over Galesburg Augusta. They knocked off Paw Paw 52-47 and Delton Kellogg 69-28 next. The last game of the streak was a 37-26 win over Battle Creek Pennfield.
The Bulldogs broke their losing streak with a defensive battle against Edwardsburg, where they came away with a 23-19 win.
