The MHSAA Individual Wrestling State Championships took place Friday, March 6 at Ford Field, bringing together 1,120 wrestlers from across Michigan, all competing to become best in their division and weight class.
Schoolcraft Eagles was represented by two wrestlers at the state finals: Garrett Randall in the Division 4 126-pound weight class and Darien Jacobs in the 175-pound division.
Randall was first on the mat Friday, facing Caden Olsofsky of Addison Panthers. Olsofsky secured a first-period pin to win the opening match.
In the 175-pound division, Jacobs squared off with Eli Rowe of Beaverton Beavers. Jacobs battled early but was pinned at the one-minute mark of the first period.
Randall rebounded in his next match against David Wenkel from Benzie Central Huskies. With a four-point lead, Randall secured a pin at the 1:26 mark of the second period to advance.
Jacobs followed with his second match against Lucas Strahan of Charlevoix Rayders. Jacobs answered with a strong performance, earning a pin and moving on to the next round.
The next stage was the “blood round,” where wrestlers with one loss fight to stay alive in the tournament. A win guarantees a top-eight finish in the state, while a second loss ends the season.
Randall took the mat first in the blood round against Brayden Holt of Manistique Emeralds. Randall came through with another pin, securing his spot in Saturday’s matches and guaranteeing at least an eighth-place finish.
Jacobs then faced Don Harper-Merchant of Ithaca Yellowjackets. Jacobs battled hard but was unable to overcome the deficit, ending his season.
Saturday began with Randall facing Kaden Russell of Union City Chargers. Randall controlled the match and earned a 9-3 decision to advance.
In the next round, Randall met Mason Langlois of Houghton Lake Bobcats. Randall continued his strong run, pinning Langlois at the 2:29 mark to move into the third-place match.
