Vicksburg Historical Society genealogy program

by | May 2026 | Local History

Are you interested in starting family research? Are you already an avid genealogist but could use a little assistance? Or are you just curious about historical resources available in the area?

The Vicksburg Historical Society (VHS) is offering a new program this spring and summer called “Roots & Branches”. The goal of the Roots & Branches program is to promote history and family research and the organizations and resources that support this research.

There are many local and state organizations that offer resources, often for free, which many researchers are not aware exist. Each session will begin with a presentation from a local or state organization speaking about what they can offer to our community.

All sessions will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Vicksburg Depot Museum.

April 28 – the program kicks off with a presentation from the Vicksburg Historical Society, sharing what treasures can be found in their collection.

May 26 – Pam Cassino of the Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society will present. The KVGS offers many programs that would be of interest to researchers.

July 28 – Adam Oster, community engagement librarian at the Library of Michigan, will present Family History Research through the Library of Michigan. This presentation will teach the basics of researching your family’s history through the collections of the Library of Michigan and include an overview of digital resources. The VHS is working on enlisting more presenters, so check our website, vicksburghistory.org, and social media for more information in the coming weeks.

Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and laptops (computers are limited) to work on their research after the presentation. Representatives of the VHS and the presenting organizations will be on hand to discuss and aid beginners and those hitting a “brick wall” in their research.

RSVP links are available on both the VHS website and our Facebook events page.
