Vicksburg Arts has announced creation of the David T. Reisterer Scholarship Fund, established through a generous gift from Gail Reisterer in memory of her late husband. The scholarship will help children attend this summer’s Art of Nature camps through a no-questions-asked, pay-what-you-can approach.
The scholarship reflects Gail Reisterer’s desire to support local children through creative learning, exploration, and community connection. Gail Reisterer has been a thoughtful and committed supporter of Vicksburg Arts, offering steady encouragement, advice, and friendship. Her continued belief in the organization’s mission has helped strengthen Vicksburg Arts’ work to make the arts welcoming and accessible.
“At Vicksburg Arts, we believe every child should have access to meaningful creative experiences,” said Executive Director Eltine DeYoung. “Summer camp gives children a place to discover new interests, build confidence, make friends, and express themselves. This scholarship helps ensure that cost does not stand in the way.”
The Reisterer Scholarship will provide tuition assistance for families registering for Vicksburg Arts’ Art of Nature Summer Camps, held in June and July at the Vicksburg Outdoor Education Center. Week-long half-day camps are available for ages 6 to 8, and week-long full-day camps are offered for ages 9 to 12.
The camps combine hands-on artmaking, nature-inspired projects, outdoor exploration, collaborative activities, and imaginative skill-building. As demand for youth arts programming continues to grow, Vicksburg Arts remains focused on keeping programs affordable for families throughout South Kalamazoo County.
“We understand that summer opportunities can become financially difficult for many households,” DeYoung said. “Our goal is to make the scholarship process simple, welcoming, and respectful. Families may request support without explanation, so parents can focus on giving their child this experience rather than worrying about the full cost.”
“David believed deeply in community and in creating opportunities for others,” Gail Reisterer said. “Supporting children through the arts is a meaningful way to honor his memory, and I hope this scholarship allows more young people to experience the joy, confidence, and creativity that come from being able to participate.”
Through the Reisterer Scholarship, more children will be able to take part in a summer experience that encourages creativity, confidence, friendship, and joyful learning. For Vicksburg Arts, the gift is both a memorial tribute and a continuation of Gail’s generous commitment to community, access, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to create.
Volunteer camp counselor positions are also available for teens ages 14 to 18 who would like to assist with camp activities, work alongside peers, and support younger campers.
Registration is now open for June and July Art of Nature Summer Camps. Families interested in camp offerings or scholarship assistance through the Reisterer Scholarship may visit VicksburgArts.org for details, registration, and scholarship requests.
