Creative Parks Pop Up Series

by | Oct 2026 | Community

Vicksburg Arts has partnered with the Village of Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department to introduce a brand-new type of community programming: the Creative Parks Pop Up Series.

This initiative was created to bring together art, community and the outdoors while encouraging residents to experience some of the beautiful parks and public spaces throughout Vicksburg. By bringing creative opportunities outside of traditional studios and galleries, Vicksburg Arts hopes to make art more accessible while giving people a new reason to get outside, explore their community and connect with one another.

These free, all-ages events are designed for everyone—whether you consider yourself an artist or simply want to try something new. Through hands-on projects, local artist demonstrations and opportunities to experiment with different mediums, the series encourages creativity across generations while introducing community members to the parks and outdoor spaces right in their own backyard.

The first Creative Parks Pop Up was held at Oswalt Park, at the corner of Main and Prairie Streets in downtown Vicksburg on August 29th. Appropriately named “Pick Your Palette,” the event kicked off the series with what could best be described as an art buffet.

Creative stations surrounded the park, offering watercolor with instruction from artist Nancy Smith, acrylic painting on canvas, markers, sketching, stamping and more. Local artist Bryce Cooley joined the event as a caricature artist, creating one-of-a-kind drawings for attendees. Music filled the park as kids and adults moved from station to station, experimenting with different mediums and creating alongside friends, family and neighbors.

But the Creative Parks Pop Up Series is about more than making art. It’s about activating our public spaces, supporting and connecting residents with local artists, and creating shared experiences that build a stronger sense of community. When people have the opportunity to contribute, create and gather together in a public space, those parks become more than places we simply pass by—they become places where memories and connections are made.

Vicksburg Arts is excited to continue the series with additional Creative Parks Pop Ups planned for October 10 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at Oswalt Park and November 7 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at Clark Park.

Each pop-up will offer a new opportunity to experience art whether it be visual, performing or literary, explore a local park and connect with the community. Events are free and open to all ages, and no previous art experience is necessary.

At the heart of the Creative Parks Pop Up Series is a simple idea: use creativity to connect people to one another and to the places that make Vicksburg special.
