As a senior high school I was asked by Schoolcraft High School Principal Mrs. Flynn to be the SportsmanshipSquad Leader. This roll was something completely new to me and I had no idea what I was going to be doing but it’s something that I enjoy because I get to be apart of the student sections that attends football games every Friday night.
The Sportsmanship Squad is run by Parker Leighton and me during football season and during basketball season another boy will be chosen to help me because Parker will be playing basketball. Our job as leaders of this squad is to get students excited about games all during the week.
I work on getting the most people possible to come out and support our fellow classmates that are playing in the games. Another thing that Parker and I do is try to come up with themes for the games that are being played and tell students to try their best to follow the theme.
Here at Schoolcraft High School we participate in something called Battle of the Fans where you are recognized for your sportsmanshipand class spirit. Throughout the year we record videos of the chants that happen in the student section and at the end of basketball season we put all the footage together from the beginning of the year, into a video that we turn in. Our chances at winning increase when a lot of students participate in the student section cheers and when we are all really loud. This year we want to get big student sections at the games, and we also want the freshmen class to participate when we cheer. It makes our student section sound that much better and it will help us win the Battle of the Fans at the end of the year.
So far this year our student sections have been very successful at home football games and at the first game at Parchment we sounded really good. Mrs. Flynn received a lot of good feedback from Parchment students, parents and fans saying that we did really well. The goal for the student section is to just get everybody to come out and support the players. We’re looking for more students to attend volleyball games and to get involved in making that student section just as good as the student section on Friday nights for football. There is a twitter account that tells the themes and lets people know what will be going on in the student section and if anybody ever needs to know a theme they can check that @SchoolcraftfFans.
