It’s not your usual knitting and crocheting society, it’s a dedicated group of church ladies, who helped make lap robes for River Manor Nursing Home in Three Rivers last year.
Ladies in the Prayer Shawl Ministry from the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church, knit and read, sometimes it’s the Biblical Bits for Nitwits, they joke. Their purpose became much clearer when a member of the group, Jean Sehy, was challenged to provide 75 knitted lap robes for long-term patients at the nursing home.
When Sehy started the project, she was a bit overwhelmed but knew it would be completed she said, even though it seemed like a daunting task. It was accomplished in three months with the help of the church knitting group and friends and relatives who pitched right in to help.
Donations of yarn came in and they scrounged garage sales for suitable materials. Every time Sehy went to deliver the lap robes, she came back with heart-warming stories to tell. It meant a lot to the families of the patients, with one person who passed away, wanting to be buried in the shawl they knitted.
