The Vicksburg Historical Society July program will feature the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians on Tuesday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. This unique presentation will be held at the Community Pavilion located on North Richardson Street. Audience members are advised to bring lawn chairs for comfortable seating.
There are more than 1,200 tribal members. The Huron Potawatomi’s primary Indian Health and Bureau of Indians Affairs service area cover Allegan, Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Ken and Ottawa counties. The Tribe’s administrative office is located at the Pine Creek Reservation in Athens Township.
Elizabeth Ballew, a member of the Huron Band of the Potawatomi will discuss the Native Americans in and around the Vicksburg area. Elizabeth is learning to speak the language of the Potawatomi tribe and can share some words that have special meaning. During the last 15 minutes of the program a member of the Huron Band to perform a few of the dances. “Participation will be welcomed as we learn together,” says Karen Hammond, vice president of the Historical Society board of directors.
