Vicksburg Little League All Star softball teams in all three divisions set records for advancing the furthest in state tournaments in memory, sweeping all three district level playoffs.
The three divisions representing Vicksburg are 9 and 10-year-olds in the Little Major Girls division, Major Girls division of 11 and 12-year-old players, and the Junior division of 13 and 14-year-old girls.
Starting with the oldest in the junior division, the Vicksburg girls drew two byes out of District 15 and the sectionals. They weren’t so lucky at the state level, losing three games that spelled elimination. This group is coached by Betsy Wright, Stephanie Nelson and Jon Needam.
The Major Girls division team won its division title, the regional pool play and quarterfinals on a strong showing by pitchers Kelsey Diekman and Sidney Finos. This team is made up of players from Vicksburg and Centreville. They are coached by Rick Simmons, Bret Cook and Kelly Spence.
The Little Major Girls team went undefeated in District tournament play and in the championship game the mercy rule kicked in after 3 ½ innings against a team from Edwardsburg. They played in the state tournament in Essexville on Aug. 1. Big contributors in the march to the state finals were Maya Peters and Audrey Schau. They both had big hits with Schau hitting a grand slam home run with an in-the-park wallop. Their managers and coaches are Steve Peters, Marshall Schau and Jamie Barga.
