Jackie Skinner, long-time volunteer for veterans’ causes and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), pulled a coup recently by obtaining three volumes of Revolutionary War history books. She is pictured above with Jean Warfield and Sallie Platt, also DAR members, as they carried the books into the Schoolcraft library to donate them to Faye VanRavenswaay (above right), library director.
Entitled America’s Women in the Revolutionary War Era – 1760-1790, they were published by the DAR a few years ago. Skinner attended the 124th Continental Congress recently, the DAR’s national convention, held every year in Washington D.C. “They were giving the three volume sets away to members on a first come, first serve basis, so I hustled right up to the office and was one of the first persons in line to obtain them. They were way too heavy to carry out of the building, but I somehow managed it. I thought it would be a good idea to donate them to the Schoolcraft library, where patrons could use them for research. You probably wouldn’t want to read them just for fun.”
All three women are members of the Lucinda Hinsdale Stone chapter of the DAR, which is Kalamazoo based, with close to 100 members. Skinner has served as past state chaplain, just completing her term in June and past Regent of the Kalamazoo chapter.
