Imagine a couple of hundred soldiers firing their muskets one after another in a continuous sound.
That’s the fue de joie, a rifle salute fired by soldiers on a ceremonial occasion, and it will be heard and seen at the opening of the Revolutionary War re-enactment at Vicksburg Recreation Park at dusk, June 24.
The feu de joie – literally, “the firing of joy” – began hundreds of years ago, with companies discharging their muskets one soldier at a time, going from right to left and back to front.
