Brian Freiberger Becomes South County News Intern

brian intern 1The South County News and the area served by the newspaper have been selected by Brian Freiberger to for his college internship in journalism. He is going to be a junior at Olivet College in the upcoming school year with a major in journalism and mass communication. He is the current editor of the school newspaper, the Echo.

He chose the South County News because of the small town feel and the uniqueness of the publication, he said. “The reason I came here was because my advisor, Joanne Williams at Olivet College, told me, ‘I don’t remember her name, but you need to go talk to her (Sue)’ at the Michigan Press Association January meeting. I am greatly appreciative of the opportunity the South County News has given me to take that next step in my career.”

Freiberger is from Onsted, a small village in Lenawee County located near Michigan International Speedway. Because of the area he is from he realized right away that he wasn’t going to be reporting as if he was interning on the New York Times. He understands small towns and the many human-interest stories that comprise the newspaper each month. He is living here for the summer until he reports for football practice at Olivet in mid-August. He plays defensive back for the Olivet team as a starter on 2016 when the team compiled a 9-2 record in the MIAA and won their second straight conference championship.

You will see his byline in a number of stories that he covered last month in this June issue of the South County News. He has also been helping with social media.
