Schoolcraft photographer Katie Redmond, passionate about empowering women through her art, has applied that passion to empowering girls as well, through a three-hour event she calls “#Unstoppable.”
Many girls, said Redmond, owner of K. Redmond Photography, “are hurting and could use a little extra encouragement and some tools to help feel empowered.” She hosted the first “tween empowerment event” in February, 2020, and the second one in early May this year. “This year has been especially hard for our kids. I’ve seen kids who are used to being super involved in school and activities and now they are struggling.” And the pandemic made it worse.
In the event, the girls hear some inspiring speakers, talk about positivity, gratitude and negative “head trash” and finding some “superpowers.” They leave with new friends, some swag and some empowering tools.
They arrive with a word that makes them feel confident. They leave with a photo of themselves, with the word written on an arm or leg – and a smile.
There’s a price for the event: $50. It’s a fundraiser in part: It raised $1,000 for another area empowering event: Girls on the Run.
