Just about a year ago, we decided to get a puppy. We were determined to choose wisely and to learn as much as we could about a dog’s view of the world so we could train Lucky correctly. What we did not plan for was a year with significant health issues for both of Lucky’s owners. Fortunately, we have been able to manage those issues, with the help of professional dog trainers, friends and family. Lucky is now one year old, and we enjoy taking walks with Lucky multiple times each day. Even when we are dog tired, we come back in a better mood after a walk with Lucky. And, despite some challenges in the day, we are always happy to snuggle in with him when it is time for bed. Plus, we have learned some important lessons along the way.

- Puppies are like kids—once you make the decision to have one, you are committed for life.
- Just when you think you will never get a good night’s rest, things change for the better.
- Raising a puppy is 50% dog training and 55% self-management.
- Seeing the world through a puppy’s eyes makes life more interesting and invites good surprises.
- Driving over to B&G in Schoolcraft to buy the largest and thickest tarp they sell is worth the effort, if that is what it takes to save your carpet.
- It’s never too late to learn how to use a carpet cleaner.
- Poop scooping is good exercise.
- When your dog is the only one not barking during the group training at puppy school, you feel inordinately proud.
- When your puppy grabs your underwear and leads you on a merry/angry chase, it is possible to end up laughing, but only with lots of practice.
Perhaps the most interesting thing we have learned is that surviving all the puppy trials and tribulations thus far has enhanced and enriched our lives in surprising ways. We are hoping and trusting that all the chewing, selective hearing and other annoying behaviors will eventually abate as this new year begins.
