To encourage reading and community engagement, Kimm Mayer and Cathie Magill, owners of local bookstore Gilbert and Ivy, held the first annual Book Trivia Face-Off February 25.

Three teams met in the basement of the Vicksburg District Library for a fast-paced, 90-minute competition, testing their knowledge of five books: “The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” by Stuart Turton, “Bridge of Clay” by Markus Zusak, “Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro, “The Second Life of Mirielle West” by Amanda Skenandore, and “Night of the Living Rez” by Morgan Tatty.

Team 1, The Hat Tricksters, was composed of members Jackie Koney, Katie Grossman, and Leeanne Seaver. Team 2, The Know-it-alls, included Toni David, Michelle Shew, and Merlana Akans. Team 3, We’re Reading, was composed of Allison, Hannah, and Amanda Hoff.

During three rounds, teams had 90 seconds to answer a question about a specific book. Each team wrote their answers on a whiteboard, revealing the response once all were complete.

The Hat Tricksters led through all three rounds.

Storeowners Kimm Mayer and Cathie Magill offered buckets of snacks, raffle prizes, and appreciation for the efforts and commitment of the teams who read the books and competed. Looking forward to next year, they asked for ideas and feedback.
