A senior moment: Marking the milestones

Each year we live, we celebrate important milestones that are the building blocks of a life well-lived. This year is no exception, and this season is always more richly ripe than others. At least, to me, this is a particularly sweet one, and the inspiration for writing this month’s column.

On May 24, the Rotary Club of Vicksburg celebrated a century of service in the South County area. Thanks to the leadership of David Aubry and Kristina Powers Aubry, the festivities will be long remembered for special time that united so many caring people into its mission of service above self and all the joys of acquiring forever friendships and joyful memories.

Also in May, the community gathered together to celebrate the retirement of Dr. David Schriemer, who was recruited to Vicksburg by Dr. Lloyd Appell over 35 years ago. Dr. Matthew Miller, a graduate of Vicksburg High who is now a partner at the Vicksburg family practice, kicked off the tributes to Dr. Schriemer. There were many stories and lots of laughter for all. The group was fortunate to also meet Dr. Jemellee Tadian, who will join the practice come November. As time marches on, the community feels fortunate to know that our local tradition of caring and accessible healthcare will remain.

In addition, another outstanding crop of high school students has just graduated and will now move into their next life chapters with the love and support of their families, teachers, and the community. They will pave the way for new young families. Babies will be born, each an everyday miracle. Toddlers will take their first steps, attend their first days of school and, before we know it, be graduating from high school. And, we know that means school reunions will be followed by aging, times of illness, and funerals that are sure to mark our lives.

Thinking about all this makes me once again realize that we have the opportunity, and perhaps an obligation, to celebrate all these milestones, both publicly and privately, to the fullest measure being sure to mark them for future generations. When we do, we keep the flame burning for generations to come. When we do, we also remind ourselves to remain grateful for what we can do for others and the precious gifts we have received over the years.

Perhaps today is a good time to organize our photographs and memorabilia, and to share them with others. Perhaps it is a good time to create a list of our daily and personal milestones, both big and small to reflect upon, re-celebrate, and share with others so that the stories and love continue beyond our lifetime.

Occasionally, I still spot these little signs around our village: “Be back in…” I love seeing them and the community trust they imply. On my hunt for an image, I talked with Steve Cowles of...
