August updates

by | Aug 2024 | Voices & Series

It’s August already! I’ve socked away some fresh blueberries in the freezer to enjoy this winter, and neighbors are sharing tomatoes and prizes from roadside stands. Isn’t Michigan wonderful? Last week we spent an afternoon in South Haven with friends. We walked the beach. We had dinner on the deck. We watched the sunset over beautiful Lake Michigan. And, as always, I am thankful for this wonderful state we call home. It’s amazing to me that we can drive an hour and it feels like we have entered another world. I hope you have a chance to visit the lakeshore this summer.

Poisonous hemlock spotted

A concerned reader contacted us regarding poisonous hemlock she identified along W Avenue, between Vicksburg and Schoolcraft. Poisonous hemlock looks very similar to what we know as Queen Anne’s Lace or wild carrot. Poisonous hemlock is dangerous and causes a severe reaction if touched and even death if ingested. Thank you for the phone call!

Occasionally, I still spot these little signs around our village: “Be back in…” I love seeing them and the community trust they imply. On my hunt for an image, I talked with Steve Cowles of...
