Jo Anne Ackerman, 67, Vicksburg, passed away March 17, 2025. Jo Anne was born December 20, 1957 in Three Rivers, the daughter of Harley and Lilly (Watkins) Hall. She enjoyed competing with her sister on video games, drawing art, and crocheting. She will be remembered as having an independent spirit, and was kindhearted, loving and straightforward. She missed her old chihuahua, Angel, after she passed. She is survived by her sister Christine Grove of Vicksburg; nieces Cher (Bill) Nickols of Vicksburg and Charlotte Harris of Sturgis; nephew Wayne Berry of Three Rivers; great-nieces Kelsey and Cloe; and one great-nephew Sebastion. Stanley L. Andres, 73, Portage, passed away March 17, 2025. Stanley was born December 29, 1951, in Vicksburg, the son of Bruce and Charlotte (Hewey) Andres. Stan graduated from Portage Central High School. His career started with roofing for Brundige, followed by some construction work before finishing as a truck driver for Schneider Trucking. His true love was motorcycles which included riding his Harley-Davidson. He was also a part owner of a drag racing motorcycle. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and being a sports memorabilia collector of all kinds. Stanley was also a lover of animals as well. Stan was strong-willed and had a great sense of humor. Stanley is survived by his son, Michael (Janet Swanwick) Andres of Galesburg; grandchildren Sydney (Jacob) Henderson of Fulton, Chase Andres of Portage, and Matthew Andres of Vicksburg; and great grandson Oliver Henderson. Kasey Thomas Martin Bowen, born February 9, 1986, in Kalamazoo, passed away March 11, 2025, in Walled Lake. Raised in Vicksburg, Kasey enjoyed fishing on Gourdneck Lake and playing football. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 2004, got an associate degree from KVCC in 2006, and earned his bachelor’s in business administration from WMU in 2009. Kasey joined Parker Hannifin in 2013, excelling within the electric vehicle industry. His passions included jet skiing, golfing, drone photography, beaches, and U of M football. He treasured time spent with sister Kyla and cousins Troy and Senika at the pool. Driven by faith and compassion, he dreamed of starting a family. Kasey leaves behind his father, Greg, and stepmother Jan Bowen; sister Kyla (Matthew) Morgan; stepsister Andraya Blank; numerous extended family members and cherished friends. Julaine Kay (VanAtta) Burgess was born November 6, 1954. Julaine lost her battle with cancer and went home to the Lord on February 28, 2025. She graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1972. Julaine was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, auntie and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of love and will be greatly missed by many.

Karen L. Duckworth, 76, Scotts, passed away March 1, 2025. She graduated from University High School and earned her bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from WMU. She began her career as a fourth-grade teacher before directing the teen program through the Voluntary Action Center. Karen was instrumental in the creation of the Disability Resource Center, which became the Disability Network. As president and CEO, she was a key contributor to the writing of the American Disability Act (ADA). In the 1970s and 1980s, she initiated the “Barrier Bash” to promote awareness for people with disabilities. She also served as the executive director for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) and worked as a medical social worker. She loved animals, gardening, and fishing at the family cottage. She was a founding member of Country Christian Evangelical Free Church. The heart of Karen’s life was her family. She married Al Duckworth on August 23, 1976, in Kalamazoo. Karen Louise Duckworth leaves behind Al’s children Robin (Tim) Kueppers and Keith (Shari) Duckworth and grandchildren Sarah Kueppers, Stephen Kueppers, Jordan Duckworth and Jacob Duckworth, as well as other cousins and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Al Duckworth, father Frank Decker, mother Louise (Squires) Decker and brother James Decker. Michael Melvin Hendrick, 80, Three Rivers, passed away February 20, 2025. He was born July 7, 1944, in Kalamazoo, the son of Melvin and Lucille (Schleisman) Hendrick. He graduated from Comstock High School in 1962 and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Western Michigan University. Mike served his country in the United States Marine Reserves and worked for over 40 years as a journeyman carpenter at American Axle. He married Patricia on March 2, 1974, and took great pride in his family. His roles as husband, father, and grandfather were among his proudest accomplishments. Mike will be remembered for his memorable catchphrases and words of wisdom. He was a loyal Detroit Lions fan and supported the team through its highs and lows. Above all else, his strong devotion to his faith in God was demonstrated through various acts of service to friends and family throughout his life. Survived to mourn his absence are his wife, Patricia; children Michele (Saurabh) Bhan, Joseph Hendrick, Sarah Hendrick and Laura Hendrick; and grandchildren Eva and Noah Bhan. Roger Alan Keyes, Sr., 86, Vicksburg, passed away March 16, 2025. Roger was born August 27, 1938, in Kalamazoo, the son of Archie and Verna (Lazar) Keyes. He went through Portage Public Schools. His career started with Brundige in Kalamazoo, and he retired from General Motors Fisher Body Plant after more than 27 years. Roger loved the outdoors, riding motorcycles and hill climbing. He enjoyed stock car racing, archery and hunting and fishing. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed shooting pool. Roger loved fishing and had a boat in South Haven named after his young daughter that passed, Julie Ann. The thrill of riding a dune buggy at his property at Silver Lake was one of his most favorite times. He loved his family and had a big heart, kind soul, and good sense of humor. His great grandchildren affectionately referred to him as “Pop-Pop.” Roger was preceded in death by wife Joyce; daughter Julie Ann; and father Archie Keyes. He is survived by his children, Roxanne Norman and Roger (MaryLynn Wilcox) Keyes, II; grandchildren Crystal Norman, Veronica Norman, and Monique Wilcox; and great-grandchildren Evan, Ian, Maddox, Mallary, and Faye. Billie Jo Longenecker, 70, Vicksburg, was reunited with her beloved husband in the presence of their Lord and Savior February 6, 2025, at Centrica Rose Arbor Place. She was born September 22, 1954, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Willie and Josephine (Limpritch) Berry. Billie graduated from Loy Norrix High School and briefly attended Davenport University. She worked several clerical jobs before finding her home at the Kalamazoo County Treasurer’s Office as a senior account clerk. Billie married Gary Longenecker on April 26, 1975. They enjoyed camping with the family and taking trips to amusement parks including Cedar Point, 6 Flags, and Michigan’s Adventure. Billie always enjoyed these thrills and was proud to cross off a bucket list dream when she went skydiving for her 50th birthday. Billie was a loving mother and devoted friend. She had a special place in her heart for dogs and will be missed dearly by her yorkie-poo Tango. Billie enjoyed live entertainment in any form. She and her dear friend Pam saw dozens of concerts together all over the country. Billie was a Christian and regularly attended church. William Joseph Nickols Sr., 85, Vicksburg, passed away peacefully at his home on March 1, 2025. A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, William was born on September 21, 1939, to Charles and Katherine (White) Nichols. William honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965, earning a marksman (M-14 rifle) commendation. William began his career as a welder and later transitioned to a career as a semi-truck driver. He took pride in his work and enjoyed the freedom of the open road, traveling across the country while providing for his family. Known for his unwavering loyalty and kindhearted nature, William was a devoted partner, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in passing by his parents and brother John Clark. He is survived by his beloved partner, Barbara Simpkins; children Teresa Caswell, Rosella (Kenneth) McDonald, Shan Nickols, and William (Cher) Nickols Jr. William is also survived by his siblings, Shirley (Charles) Turner, Robert Nichols, and Charles D. James Leslie Parker, 72, Schoolcraft, passed away March 17, 2025. He was born August 6, 1952, in Kalamazoo, to Chester and Minniebelle (Chapman) Parker. On September 5, 1970, James married the love of his life, Jerrita Rice Parker. James dedicated 35 years of service as a proud union pipefitter before retiring in 2010. James was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. He found joy in the simple pleasures of nature, whether it was tinkering around in his barn, cutting wood, or caring for his beloved hobby farm and livestock. His favorite retreat was the 35 Mile Club cabin in the Upper Peninsula, where he made countless memories surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he treasured time with his family. James was preceded in passing by his parents and his brothers, Thomas and Edwin Parker. Robert T. Peters, Sr., 86, affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully at his home on March 15, 2025. From a young age, Bob knew his calling was to educate and mentor. He pursued this passion with unwavering dedication, beginning his journey by joining the Marine Reserves during his high school years. He graduated from Schoolcraft and furthered his education by earning a master’s degree from Western Michigan University. In 1962, he embarked on a fulfilling career as a teacher and coach, impacting the lives of countless students across several area schools. Bob’s commitment to his community was evident in his work in Schoolcraft, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Junior Pro Football and Biddy Basketball programs. His contributions were recognized and honored with his induction into the Schoolcraft Hall of Fame. In retirement, Bob spent winters in the warmth of Florida and summers at Kline’s Resort. He found joy in fishing, golfing, and passionately following his favorite sports teams. Bob’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He shared 64 years of devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Christie. He was a loving father to his sons, Bob Jr. and Rodney, and a proud grandfather to his four grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Linda); his sister, Pat Laing; his sister-in-law, Babette Garrison; and his brother-in-law, Chandler Garrison (Brenda). Brian G. Ryder, 60, Vicksburg, passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 28, 2025. He was born March 2, 1964, in Three Rivers, the son of Christina Kelley. Brian was a graduate of Vicksburg High School’s class of 1982. He was known for his cooking skills, especially his famous stuffing and homemade Chex Mix—both of which will be missed at family gatherings. He loved classic movies and music. Brian was a devoted caretaker to his mother, a beloved father, a cherished brother, an entertaining uncle, and a proud Papa. He gave the best hugs, and his warmth and kindness were unmatched—unless you dared to talk loudly in the background while he was ordering a pizza. Brian was a simple man who lived a simple life: enjoy the classics, savor a good home-cooked meal, and love your family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his love, laughter, and recipes will never be forgotten. Brian is survived by his mother, Christina Kelley; daughter Angela Reese; brother Ken Owen; sister-in-law Bonnie Ryder; grandchildren Halie, Hannah, Hayden; niece Alyssa (Andrew); and nephews Nate, Drew, and Mike. Susan Annette Thomas, 72, Scotts, passed away March 25, 2025. Sue was born January 16, 1953, in Mount Pleasant and graduated from Chippewa Hills High School in 1971. She earned her bachelor’s degree from WMU and was a member of Chi Omega. She married John Thomas on July 28, 1978, and spent 46 joyful years together. Susan worked for over 20 years as a teacher at Sunset Elementary and Vicksburg Middle School. Creative and fun-loving, she loved the outdoors, entertaining, and living on Long Lake. Susan was an avid shopper, gardener, and baker. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Sue is survived by her husband John; children Ryan (Noreen) Thomas of Portage, Lindsay (Kevin) Dodd of Naples, Florida, and Alysse Thomas of Scotts; grandchildren Liam Thomas, Una Thomas, Macy Dodd and Brooks Dodd; brothers, James (Kathy) Coady, and Terry (Laurie) Coady; and several nieces and nephews. Scott M. Thompson, 63, Wyoming, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 20, 2025. Scott was born May 8, 1961, in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Veronika (Hargot) Thompson. Scott was an honor student and graduate of Hackett Catholic Central and the University of Michigan College of Engineering. He was employed at Materials Testing Consultants since 1985, where, as an assistant project engineer, he was a mentor for many team members in geotechnical engineering. He is remembered there as patient, caring and having an enthusiastic and exceptionally detailed approach to his work. Scott enjoyed hobbies, particularly collecting and painting war game sets. His designs took immense talent to complete, and he sometimes traveled to Pennsylvania to compete with them. Scott was extremely intelligent and an avid reader with a love of history. He also adored animals and will be greatly missed by his dog, Susie. Scott is survived by his mother, Veronika, whose care he was devoted to for many years. Todd Edward Weddon, Vicksburg, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 3, 2025. Todd was born in Kalamazoo on October 1, 1943, the son of Dr. Edward R. and Willah (Skinner) Weddon. He was raised on the family farm in Stockbridge, Mich. and graduated from Olivet College in 1966 where he majored in biology and ran track, earning the moniker of fastest man on campus, or “FMOC.” After graduation, Todd moved to the Kalamazoo area to work for the Upjohn Company. In 1991, he married Carol (DeDoes). He retired early to focus on their thoroughbred horse racing/breeding business and raise their children. Todd had a quick wit, and was warm and inquisitive. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carol, and their children Matthew and Elizabeth Weddon, as well as sisters Patrice (Jim) Johnson, Amy (Terry) Tomlin, brother Alex (Becky) Weddon, sisters-in-law Kim Weddon and Sandy DeDoes, daughter Lisa Maggio, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, son Nathan T. Weddon, brother Bradley Weddon, sister-in-law Colleen Weddon, and parents-in-law Nathan and Lois DeDoes.
