The Vicksburg varsity soccer team was very evenly matched in a recent home outing against South Haven. Ultimately, the team could not withstand a sustained surge of offensive pressure in the second half, losing the game 3-2.
The Bulldogs got off to a fantastic start in the game. Malachi McClelland scored the game’s opening goal early in the contest. The shot appeared to be an attempted cross to a teammate in front of the goal. However, it ended up going over the goalie’s head and into the back corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Rams didn’t let the lead stand long. They tied the game 1-1 shortly after that goal. However, Vicksburg regained the lead after a beautiful pass from Judah McClelland found Malachi in front of the net. He scored to make things 2-1.
The Bulldogs had a difficult time moving the ball past midfield for much of the day. Freshman goalie Krew Witters had his hands full all day. He managed to make ten saves in the contest. However, South Haven was still able to tie the game before the half.
The second half of the game went much like the first, with sustained offensive pressure from the Rams. They finally broke the stalemate with 6:44 left in the game to make it 3-2. The Bulldogs tried heartily but were unable to get another score before time ran out.
Vicksburg won a recent contest against rival Three Rivers 4-1. Their only other win of the season came against Hastings in a 4-3 shootout. This year’s team has been hit hard by a slew of injuries. There were enough to force the cancellation of the JV season. The Bulldogs have six games left to end on a positive note.
