Players are allowed to play 16 dates during golf season, and 9 or 18 holes count the same as one event. On September 17, the varsity girls team doubled up on conference jamborees while first playing 9 holes at Vicksburg’s Angel Crossing, then 9 holes at Pine View at Three Rivers. The Wolverine Conference has 9-hole jamborees, and each school hosts one. The Vicksburg girls also play outside conference invitationals which are 18 holes.
The Wolverine Conference Tournament at both Angel Crossing and Pine View on the 17th of September included Paw Paw, Sturgis, Three Rivers, Vicksburg, Plainwell, Otsego, Edwardsburg, and Niles. The girls came out with another good performance in 3rd place finish at both Vicksburg and Three Rivers on this day. At Vicksburg, the girls finished with the best score of the year with 11 strokes, and within 10-15 strokes of Plainwell and Otsego, the two top teams. There was a big improvement in the team’s scores as the top two schools have been beating Vicksburg golfers by 25-30 strokes the whole season up to this point.
According to Coach Jared Meyer, Vicksburg had 2 juniors and 4 freshmen playing, by far the youngest team and most inexperienced team in the conference. But they keep getting better. The girls as a team at the home jamboree at Angel Crossing shot 183, which is their best of the year so far. Coach Jared went on to state that the team also finished in 3rd place at Three Rivers in the afternoon at Pine View, but the freshmen hit a wall with a long day and heat, so they didn’t score nearly as well. Camryn Rosier and Kaitlyn Keown solidified their all-conference positions (top ten individually by season long scoring average). The team finished a solid 3rd in the conference by extending their lead over Sturgis and finishing behind Plainwell and Otsego. The girls who played in Vicksburg and Three Rivers jamborees on Wednesday, September 17th are #1 Rosier (jr.), #2 Keown (fr.), #3 Madelyn Steigenberg (fr.), #4 Lexi Triemstra (jr.), #5 Avery Moyer (fr.), and #6 Avery Currier (fr.).
The team traveled to Coldwater on September 19 to compete against 21 other schools. It finished a strong 6th place. Camryn Rosier came in 5th place, and Lexi Triemstra had a great day as she broke 100 for the first time and made her first birdie with a hole-out from 120 yards.
Currently, the team has finished most of its events in the middle or slightly above against their competition and they are currently 3rd out of 8 teams in the conference standing behind Plainwell and Otsego.
The only returning senior on the girls’ team is out indefinitely with a knee injury and the team only had one returning varsity player. The good news, according to Coach Jared Meyer, is that the numbers are great with 17 girls on the team including 7 freshmen. The girls are looking forward to the Conference Championship on October 1st. Coach Meyer said, “we are young and inexperienced, improving daily with only one senior and a bunch of freshmen so the future is bright.”
