Community Corner: Art programs for seniors

by | Oct 2025 | Voices & Series

We are back this month with another short interview! This month I talked with Eltine DeYoung about arts programming at the South County Senior Center. Vicksburg Arts has been an essential partner on the Senior Center from the very beginning, and we are happy to offer arts programming through them.

Drew: What makes art classes and art programming such an important thing to offer to seniors?

Eltine: For seniors, art is more than just making something beautiful. It’s about connection, memory, movement, joy – really about staying alive in every sense of the word. When you pick up a brush, or sit down with clay, you’re not just exercising your hands, you’re keeping your mind active, too. And there’s this ripple effect – sharing stories, laughing together, even just sitting side by side in a creative space. That’s what Vicksburg Arts’ mission is all about: using the arts to inspire, engage, and connect people across generations.

Drew: What would you say to someone who doesn’t think art is for them?

Eltine: Honestly? I’d tell them art is for them. Most people who say “not me” are carrying some old comment or grade from way back. But art isn’t about being perfect. It’s about discovery, expression, and sometimes even healing. One of our big goals at Vicksburg Arts is inclusive programming that reflects the diversity of our community and makes sure everyone has access. That means there’s a place for every single person at the table. You don’t need to be an “artist.” You just need to be willing to play a little.

Drew: What classes or programs have you been really excited to offer at SCSC?

Eltine: I love the variety. We’ve had jewelry and skill-building watercolor classes that light people up, and fiber arts – weaving – even some creative “recycling” projects like junk journaling. These classes reflect our vision of a community where creativity connects people in meaningful ways. They also fit with our long-term goals: building sustainable programs, strengthening our volunteer network, and showing that art is accessible to everyone.

Drew: Sounds like this is about more than just a class – it’s about building something lasting.

Eltine: Exactly. We want people to feel proud not just of what they make, but of being part of something bigger. That’s why Vicksburg Arts is working on sustainable funding, a strong and inclusive brand identity, and clear structures so we can keep showing up for this community – whether it’s at the Senior Center or beyond. Our vision is simple: everyone should be able to experience the joy of the arts, and the Senior Center is a perfect place to make that real.
