The Schoolcraft Eagles boys golf team captured the Division 3 Regional Championship on May 26 at Island Hills Golf Club, earning a trip to the MHSAA Division 3 State Finals.
The Eagles claimed the regional title with a team score of 313, edging Kalamazoo Christian Comets by just two strokes. Kalamazoo Christian finished second with a 315, while Delton Kellogg Panthers placed third with a 321.
Rounding out the regional standings were Cassopolis in fourth, Saugatuck fifth, Lake Odessa Lakewood sixth, Quincy seventh, Buchanan tied with Olivet for eighth, Lawton 10th, Constantine 11th, Parchment 12th, Watervliet 13th, Niles Brandywine 14th, Coloma 15th, Three Oaks River Valley 16th, Dowagiac 17th, and Bronson 18th.
Freshman Toby DeGroote paced the Eagles with an outstanding round of 73. He was followed closely by sophomore Ethan Demaso with a 74. Senior Hayden Demaso carded an 80, while freshman Sawyer Sportel shot an 86 and senior Parker Rigby finished with an 88.
The regional championship sent the Eagles to the MHSAA Division 3 State Finals on June 5-6 at Bedford Valley Golf Club. Eighteen of the state’s top teams competed for the coveted Division 3 championship trophy.
At the state finals, Grand Rapids West Catholic claimed the championship by shooting 314 on the opening day and 311 on day two for a winning total of 625. Traverse City St. Francis finished runner-up with a 638, while Kalamazoo Christian placed third with a 643.
Schoolcraft wrapped up an impressive season with an 11th-place finish, posting a two-day total of 672.
The Eagles’ state finals roster featured seniors Hayden Demaso and Parker Rigby, sophomore Ethan Demaso, and freshmen Toby DeGroote, Sawyer Sportel, and Parker Luyeyn. With four underclassmen on the roster, Schoolcraft’s future looks bright as the Eagles build on a regional championship season and valuable state tournament experience.
