Band co-director ‘excited’ by changes

by | Sep 2026 | Schools

Jay Bennett, co-band director of the Vicksburg bands, grew up in Fairfield, Ohio, and moved to Lake Orion, Michigan, halfway through his freshman year of high school. He attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a degree in instrumental music education in 2020. He met his wife, Katie Bennett, in the Bronco Marching Band. They live in Three Rivers with their two cats, Styles and Phoebe.

What can you share with the Vicksburg Community about your role with the Vicksburg bands and considering Rosier’s departure in July, what are you looking forward to most about what comes next for the Vicksburg Band Program and the upcoming Marching Season for “The Big Red Machine?”

I have been teaching at Vicksburg Middle and High School since 2020 and have spent the last six years working with Ben Rosier in all of the band classes in both the middle and high schools.

The thing I am looking forward to most is continuing the tradition of excellence in the Vicksburg Band Program and supporting the Vicksburg Community with great music!

I am excited to work with another director who brings high expectations, a positive attitude, and an infectious love and passion for music and our students in Vicksburg. Cheryl has already been making a big impact on the Big Red Machine, and I am excited to have a great first year working with her.

The Big Red Machine is excited to debut our [Competitive Half-Time] show “Gold Rush” at the first Varsity Home football game against Mattawan, on Thursday, September 3rd, and we are excited to support the football team for another great season!
