6th Annual Walk for the Poor Sept. 27th

by | Sep 2026 | Community

The community is invited to lace up the shoes and join the annual Walk for the Poor, a family-friendly event that supports neighbors in need. This event coincides with the Vicksburg Harvest Festival, which is always the last Sunday in September.

The walk, a fundraiser organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Vicksburg and St. Edwards Catholic Church in Mendon, will be held on Sunday, September 27 starting at 1:30 p.m., with on-site registration beginning at 1 p.m.

The event, now in its sixth year, supports the society of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission to “grow spiritually by offering person-to-person services to neighbors in need.” Last year’s generous donations enabled the group to assist 125 families. The assistance is primarily for local people experiencing rent or utility payment issues.

The efforts have prevented evictions, kept homes warm during harsh Michigan winters, and provided for families navigating economic challenges. St. Vincent de Paul volunteers work in conjunction with other churches and agencies, such as South County Community Services, to help struggling families.

All are welcome to join us and help raise money for neighbors in need. The trail is clearly marked, which allows participants to walk at a comfortable group pace or to set their own distance and speed.

Community involvement is the backbone of the Walk for the Poor’s success. Local businesses and individual donors come together to support the cause. By walking, donating, or just spreading the word, everyone can help this event succeed. Please consider participating or donating to this most worthwhile fundraiser. Monetary donations will be accepted at the registration tent. Each dollar donated goes directly to those needing financial assistance. The goal this year is to significantly increase the number of walkers and amount of money raised.

On Sunday, September 27, participants should meet at the Vicksburg Recreational Area and Trail, 12538 S Sprinkle Rd, with registration starting at 1 p.m. and the walk beginning at 1:30 p.m., with every step contributing to the fight against poverty. The event will conclude at 3 p.m. For more information, please call St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church at (269) 649-1629 ext. 3 and leave a message for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
