Vicksburg Arts is excited to introduce a brand-new opportunity for creativity, connection and hands-on learning with the launch of the Vicksburg Arts Studio Series, an adult-focused arts program hosted in our downtown studio at 101 S. Main St., Vicksburg.
Designed for ages 15 and older, the Studio Series will offer a diverse lineup of multi-part classes, make-and-take workshops and skill-building seminars throughout the year. Whether you’re an experienced artist looking to hone your craft, someone eager to try something completely new, or simply looking for a creative night out with friends, the series offers an opportunity to learn, experiment and immerse yourself in an arts community.
Classes begin this September with several exciting opportunities already on the calendar.
Mixed Media Art Journaling — Eight-Part Series
The Studio Series kicks off with an eight-part Mixed Media Art Journaling series, where participants get to explore, experiment, and spark their creativity! Each session introduces a new technique with time to practice before creating their own art journal page or spread.
Experiment with drawing, painting, writing, doodling, collage, gel printing, sketching, stamping, stenciling and more, using everything from acrylics and watercolors to inks, printed papers and found imagery.
Along the way, we’ll also explore art journaling as a tool for self-reflection, creative expression and processing emotions. By the end of the series, you’ll have an abundance of new skills and greater creative confidence—without the pressure of creating a “perfect” final product.
Classes will be held September 8 and 22, October 13 and 27, November 3 and 17, and December 1 and 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Nuno Scarf Workshop
On September 15 from 6–9 p.m., fiber artist Jodie Gerard will introduce participants to the art of nuno felting, a wet-felting technique that combines fabric and wool roving using water, soap and friction to create a beautifully textured textile.
Participants will create their own lightweight scarf using 100% silk chiffon and merino wool roving, choosing from a wide variety of richly dyed wool and unique embellishments such as sari silk and silk noils to make each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Each finished scarf will measure approximately 12” x 54”—a beautiful, wearable piece of fiber art to take home and enjoy.
Whet Your Whistle Workshop
On September 25, spend an evening creating a whimsical ceramic whistle with veteran art educator Marcella Hunt. In this fun hands-on workshop, Marcella will introduce participants to the basics of hand-building with clay as they create a functional whistle disguised as a one-of-a-kind creature straight from their imagination.
No prior clay experience is necessary—just bring your creativity! Participants will have finishing options for their creations, including the opportunity to return the following day to glaze their piece before it is fired. All materials and instruction are included.
Where Weaving & Ceramics Meet
On October 21 from 6:30–8:30 p.m., the Studio Series continues with a unique mixed-media workshop where ceramics and fiber arts come together. Participants will begin with a pre-made ceramic loom, adding their own creative touch by painting and personalizing the clay before using it as the foundation for their fiber piece. From there, they’ll explore weaving with a variety of fibers and textures to create a work of art that blends color, clay and fiber in an unexpected way.
One of the best parts? All materials are included in every Vicksburg Arts Studio Series class. Participants will receive full instruction, hands-on guidance and information about the tools and materials used so those who discover a new passion can continue practicing and creating on their own.
Classes vary in length, format and price, making it easy to find an experience that fits your interests and schedule. Additional workshops and classes will be announced as the Studio Series progresses.
The Vicksburg Arts Studio Series is about more than learning a technique—it’s about making space to create, connect with others and discover what happens when you give yourself permission to try something new.
